The Art of Agile Development

Author: James Shore

Chapter 1

CHAOS Report showed nearly 1/3 of software projects were cancelled outright.

The response was to create highly detailed processes that defined exactly how software was to be created. Tight control to ensure no mistakes could be made. If a process failed it was because more documentation was required.

Agile Manifesto was a response to this

there is no agile method.

you can't "use" Agile or "do" Agile... you can only be Agile.

Agile works because people make it work

Agile fails because attention moved from the principles to "Get me some Agile"

The tragedy of the Cargo Cult is its adherence to the superficial, outward signs of some idea combined with ignorance of how that idea actually worked. Agile's Cargo: you can't buy an idea, you can buy its outward signs.
